As the name suggests, Australian Parent Visas are for parents who have children who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia and who wish to join those children.

It is worth noting that for some standard parent visas, there can be a waiting list for approval of up to 30 years.

To follow a faster pathway with a waiting list of up to 2 years, it is necessary to apply for one of the following two categories of visas for parents wishing to migrate to Australia:

• Contributory Parent Visa
• Contributory Aged Parent Visa

The primary difference between the two is that in the latter, the age of applicants will be assumed to be over the standard retirement age in Australia at the time of application.

In both cases, you will need to satisfy certain health and financial viability requirements and the visa application will need to be sponsored by a child who is either an Australian Citizen, who has permanent residency rights in Australia or in some cases, is a legally resident citizen of New Zealand.

Note also that parents will need to pass a ‘balance of family’ test. To obtain a visa, they may need to show that less than 50% of their family are resident outside of Australia.

This visa area is one of the more complicated and emotional categories, as it can affect family re-unifications. So, don’t take the chance of getting it wrong – talk to us as experienced Migration Agents for further advice.
